Marrakech rewards a guide more than most cities, because almost nothing in the medina explains itself. The Koutoubia minaret set the pattern that Seville and Rabat followed. The Saadian Tombs were walled up for two centuries and only reopened in 1917. The Bahia Palace was built to be the finest in Morocco and very nearly is.

The walking tour runs five to seven hours with a licensed local guide, starting from your hotel or riad, and finishes in the souks and Jemaa el-Fna as the square fills for the evening. Half-day and full-day versions are both available. If you are also going to the mountains or the desert, this is the day to do first - the city makes more sense before you leave it than after.
